What people spend in Jakarta and other Indonesian provinces

BPS reported Rp2,962,412 monthly spending per person in Jakarta versus Rp1,337,028 in Central Java in 2025. See real Jakarta train, bus and electricity costs.

Jakarta's reported average monthly consumption spending was Rp2,962,412 per person in 2025. Central Java's was Rp1,337,028, while Bali's was Rp1,964,618. These are actual Statistics Indonesia (BPS) survey results, not invented apartment listings. They describe what people surveyed in each province consumed, not what a foreign newcomer must earn in 2026 or what a new apartment costs.

If you're moving to Jakarta, three other published prices put everyday expenses into focus: a Blok M–Bundaran HI MRT ride is Rp8,000, an ordinary Transjakarta ride Rp3,500, and a 1,300-VA household electricity connection is charged Rp1,444.70 per kWh under the quoted non-subsidized tariff. These figures help you understand individual bills without pretending they add up to one universal Indonesian budget.

What Indonesia's 2025 spending survey actually found

The BPS province-level table for 2025, updated in 2026, measures average consumption expenditure per person per month. It includes food and non-food consumption by people already living in those provinces. This is not household rent, take-home salary, a family-of-four budget or a like-for-like quote from a particular district.

DKI Jakarta province: Rp1,153,404 food + Rp1,809,008 non-food = Rp2,962,412 per person per month. Food accounted for roughly 38.9%, non-food for 61.1%. Non-food includes more than rent; it cannot be interpreted as a published apartment price.

Central Java province (Jawa Tengah): Rp667,536 food + Rp669,491 non-food; BPS total Rp1,337,028 per person. The published components differ from the total by Rp1 due to independent rounding. Jakarta's total is Rp1,625,384 higher per person, about 2.22 times Central Java's 2025 recorded consumption. That does not establish that an identical private rental in Jakarta costs 2.22 times a comparable Central Java rental.

Special Region of Yogyakarta (DI Yogyakarta): Rp766,284 food + Rp1,076,928 non-food = Rp1,843,212 per person. This covers the entire province, not only the city of Yogyakarta. University-area student boarding costs and suburban family housing do not have the same profile.

East Java province (Jawa Timur), including but much larger than Surabaya: Rp715,989 food + Rp703,152 non-food = Rp1,419,140 per person in the BPS published total (a one-rupiah rounding difference). Bali province: Rp827,210 food + Rp1,137,408 non-food = Rp1,964,618 per person. Bali's survey is not a quotation for a tourist villa or for a foreigner renting in Canggu.

The comparison is useful because it uses one statistical definition and one year across provinces. It is not a promise that someone arriving from abroad could live for those amounts: household composition, housing tenure, regional price levels and spending habits differ. Nor should you take Jakarta's survey total and add all transit costs below as if the survey excluded transport—it already measures many non-food expenditures.

Jakarta's MRT route can cost Rp132,000 or Rp616,000 across 44 rides

Jakarta MRT publishes actual station-to-station fares, not just a citywide maximum. Its matrix shows Rp3,000 from Bendungan Hilir to Setiabudi Astra, Rp8,000 from Blok M BCA to Bundaran HI and Rp14,000 from Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI. These are one-way tickets on the MRT operator's listed line.

Assuming an adult takes two rides on 22 working days, the maths is concrete: 44 × Rp3,000 = Rp132,000 for the shortest example; 44 × Rp8,000 = Rp352,000 for Blok M–Bundaran HI; and 44 × Rp14,000 = Rp616,000 for Lebak Bulus–Bundaran HI. The difference between the latter two is Rp264,000 per 44-ride month. This is a comparison of different journeys—not proof one person's address saves that amount. Transfers to buses, parking or the commuter rail, plus changes to the route, may alter the bill.

The Jakarta government publishes a regular Transjakarta bus fare of Rp3,500 per boarding, with Rp2,000 early-morning promotional service between 05:00 and 07:00 WIB. The same 44 independent single-fare rides would cost Rp154,000 regular or Rp88,000 if every boarding qualified for the early fare. These are different journeys from the MRT examples; a ticket price alone does not establish that the bus serves the same door-to-door trip in the same travel time.

Jakarta's JakLingko integrated-fare programme has advertised a Rp10,000 capped fare for eligible combined use of Transjakarta, MRT and LRT under its integrated payment arrangements. That is not a universal Rp10,000 fare for any distance, a stand-alone rail ticket or a guaranteed amount for every bank card. Your actual fare depends on the participating combination and payment setup.

Electricity: a real kWh price is not the whole bill

For a non-subsidized 1,300-VA residential PLN electricity connection, the operator's 2026 tariff explanation specifies Rp1,444.70 per kWh. The energy ministry's 30 September 2026 statement says the non-subsidized residential tariff classes did not rise for October–December 2026.

At that published rate, using 150 kWh gives an energy charge of Rp216,705 (150 × Rp1,444.70). If an air-conditioned apartment used 300 kWh, its energy component would be Rp433,410. These are usage assumptions, not measured typical consumption; provincial street-lighting taxes, prepaid-token administration, other meter or service charges and any other applicable taxes may change what is actually paid. In a rented home, it also matters whether the meter is separately billed, whether the tariff class really is R-1 1,300 VA, and whether the landlord recharges electricity.

PLN's prepaid-token example provides another real distinction: a nominal Rp100,000 electricity-token purchase can result in only about 63–65 kWh credited to a 1,300-VA meter after applicable deductions. It is incorrect to treat the full Rp100,000 as tax-free energy purchase or to interpret the token amount as kilowatt-hours.

An arrival cost that changed in September 2026

Some visitors will reach Jakarta through Soekarno–Hatta Airport. The Jakarta government confirmed the Blok M–airport SH2 bus fare became Rp15,000 on 1 September 2026, replacing the initial promotional Rp3,500. A round trip on that specific service is therefore Rp30,000 in bus fares if both trips use it. This is not a normal Transjakarta city-bus fare and does not include getting from Blok M to a residence, transfers, baggage services or other airport journeys.

A newcomer and a long-term resident do not have the same budget

A newcomer heading to a Jakarta office can now understand a key recurring difference: 44 MRT rides from Blok M to Bundaran HI = Rp352,000, versus 44 Lebak Bulus–Bundaran HI rides = Rp616,000 on the published operator tariff. If the job is near those stations, that Rp264,000 monthly rail-price difference may matter, but housing, station access and commute time still determine whether an address is sensible. We have not fabricated two apartment rents to make a total look precise. Any initial deposit, advance rent, building fees and temporary accommodation are additional cash needs separate from the monthly MRT cost.

Someone living in Central Java should not assume the Rp1,337,028 BPS per-person average is a guaranteed monthly spending limit or a minimum wage. It is the surveyed 2025 average over many residents, not a house offer and not the first month's cost of starting a new household. The Rp2,962,412 Jakarta figure uses the same definition and therefore shows a meaningful population spending difference, but it cannot determine which job offer pays enough without salary, family situation and housing information.

The useful answer is specific: BPS shows measured regional consumption differences; Jakarta operators publish genuinely different fares; PLN publishes a meter-class electricity rule. They describe real parts of Indonesian spending without masquerading as a universal 2026 expat budget. For a contract you are actually considering, the only unknown that determines your rent and initial cash is the real lease's rent, deposit and upfront charges—none of which a national spending survey can supply.
