If you are at least 55 and want to retire in Indonesia rather than take an Indonesian job, the government's current E33E senior residence route is a concrete starting point. It advertises a five-year limited stay, at least US$3,000 per month of income or allowance, and a commitment to place US$50,000 in your own account at a qualifying state-owned bank within 90 days after the limited-stay permit is issued. The official Immigration category page says no sponsor is needed for E33E. This is not the old one-year agent-sponsored retirement package that still appears on some historical government webpages.
Before paying for a year-long rental in Bali, Jakarta or Yogyakarta, separate the funds you must show at application, the much larger funds you must actually commit after approval, your monthly income, and whether you intend to work. Tourist admission, senior residence and a second-home investment commitment are different legal choices.
Which long stay matches your situation?
| Your situation | Decision to consider | Important obstacle |
|---|---|---|
| Age 62, pension US$3,500/month and access to US$55,000 | Evaluate E33E using the actual monthly income and own-name bank deposit commitment | Verify ability to place qualifying US$50,000 funds in a state-owned bank within 90 days after ITAS issue, not merely show cash for an interview |
| Age 58, income US$2,000/month but US$80,000 savings | Do not assume savings replace E33E's separate US$3,000 monthly condition | Get a category-specific decision from Immigration before paying an agent |
| Age 49, high savings, interested in a second home | Check the distinct second-home pathway and its real proof of funds/ownership | E33E minimum age 55; second-home reporting shows US$130,000 bank savings or qualifying US$1m apartment ownership as specific alternatives, not E33E thresholds |
| Retired person wants to take a local consulting job | Identify an authorised work route before performing paid local work | E33E's permission for visits, meetings and certain business-related activities does not imply a blanket paid employment permit |
| Retiree moves with spouse or adult child | Ask Immigration which separate family visa/status and proof is actually available | Principal E33E is not automatic permission for every dependent or an adult child's work |
The current E33E classification is a limited-stay visa, not Indonesian permanent residence or citizenship. Actual issued dates, work restrictions and immigration approval determine what you can do.
The E33E money requirements are three different tests
On the Indonesian Immigration E33E service, the normal electronic application includes:
- Age and identity: at least 55 years old, a national passport with at least six months' validity, recent photograph, CV and travel itinerary.
- Initial liquidity evidence: bank statements for the last three months showing living funds of at least US$2,000 (or the stated equivalent); the published wording also mentions a sponsor's statement in its general template, despite separately saying no sponsor is needed for this E33E category. Do not pay for an unnecessary sponsor solely because of the generic line.
- Recurring livelihood: evidence of income or allowance of at least US$3,000 every month. An annual average on a business brochure is not by itself the exact evidence the officer requests.
- Post-approval commitment: an undertaking to put at least US$50,000 in an account in your own name at a state-owned bank within 90 days of issuance of the limited-stay permit (ITAS). This is not the same thing as a US$50,000 visa application fee, and the official webpage describes a funds commitment rather than a government cash charge.
A real numbers example: A retiree has US$3,200 in monthly pension income, US$60,000 in savings and a passport expiring next year. They might meet the public income and planned deposit amounts, but need to prepare proof of pension regularity, the three-month bank record, the deposit arrangement and the correct passport documents. The visa is not guaranteed merely because the arithmetic adds up.
By contrast, a different retiree with US$100,000 in savings but US$2,100 monthly income does not satisfy E33E's published US$3,000 recurring-income proof. They should not relabel savings as monthly pension income. First ask the immigration office what alternative category genuinely fits.
What the five-year price actually covers
The Immigration category fee breakdown currently lists Rp13,000,000 in government charges for the five-year E33E package: Rp500,000 visa, Rp2,000,000 Category II visa verification, Rp7,000,000 limited-stay permit, and Rp3,500,000 re-entry permission.
Those four official fee components total Rp13,000,000. They are separate from the US$50,000 own-account commitment, health insurance, housing, bank transaction costs, document preparation and personal spending. Do not describe the committed funds as a Rp13m visa charge or automatically add third-party consultant prices to the government's published PNBP fee.
The category page says the entry visa is valid for 90 days from issuance to use it; this is not the five-year residence duration. On an authorised entry, the permit and re-entry permission are described as issued through the electronic immigration process, and renewal can be requested online subject to approval.
Retirement E33E versus the Second Home route
The West Jakarta Immigration Office's 2026 second-home ITAS reporting instructions show two separate types of proof for an actual Second Home limited-stay permit holder: US$130,000 savings at a listed Indonesian state bank (BRI, BNI, BTN, Mandiri or BSI), or a registered Indonesian condominium/apartment ownership certificate with a stated minimum value of US$1,000,000. The bank must provide the required proof; an online brokerage account statement or a house listing price is not the same thing.
Important scope: That source is a post-permit proof-of-funds reporting instruction for Second Home, not an all-inclusive Second Home visa application rule, and it does not prove that any applicant can simply deposit US$130,000 and receive residence. The E33E requirements and this second-home proof are not interchangeable. Check your intended category on the actual government visa portal before choosing one or moving assets.
A historical Immigration Yogyakarta tourist-retiree page still describes a one-year, agency-sponsored programme with US$1,500 monthly funds and housing costs. That is not the current E33E classification; using its numbers to claim a five-year E33E would be misleading. Always match the printed visa code and today's issuing office rule.
Where to apply and what family/work changes
Start through Indonesia's official e-Visa portal. Select the correct senior E33E code, use the actual passport and documented money source, upload only the files that the current application asks for, check the assessed government fee and follow the issued visa/ITAS terms. The government E33E page describes five working days after payment verification for processing, which is an administrative target rather than a guaranteed approval or flight-booking date.
E33E allows ordinary visiting/tourism and certain listed meetings or business-related visits, but does not automatically authorise employment, locally remunerated consultancy or selling goods/services in Indonesia. Ask Immigration and the relevant labour/business authority about the correct permit before accepting such work. If an agent claims your retirement visa permits any paid local job, demand a current written official basis rather than trusting an oral assurance.
If your spouse or children will also live in Indonesia, identify their own qualifying family route, sponsor relationship proof, passport validity and issued stay length. Do not assume a five-year permit held by the principal automatically covers a spouse or adult child, or that the spouse may work. Whether you become Indonesian tax resident also depends on actual tax law/facts, not simply the marketing label “retirement visa”; obtain tax advice for pensions, foreign income and local accounts.
Before you move or if an application fails
Funds are insufficient for E33E: do not temporarily borrow a suspicious bank balance, falsify a pension statement or use an unrelated agent's account; choose a lawful route you can actually satisfy. You are 54: E33E's stated minimum is 55, so the senior category is not currently yours. An officer asks for sponsor documents despite the no-sponsor webpage: request a case-specific explanation through the official channel before paying anyone. The deposit cannot be made by the stated 90-day deadline: contact Immigration before missing the condition rather than assuming the government visa fee covers it.
The practical next step is to write down your age, monthly verifiable income, recent bank balance, assets available for a genuine state-bank commitment, intended work, and family plan. Then check the current E33E visa code and the separate Second Home rules through the issuing authority before buying an apartment, sending funds or taking a long lease. For ordinary short visits see Indonesia visa choices; for working legally see Indonesia work and long stays.
